Shreveport is located in northwest Louisiana and is the commercial and cultural focal point of the Ark-La-Tex, the region formed by the conjunction of three states. Along with Bossier City, just across the Red River, the Shreveport metropolitan area has a population of 350,000. Shreveport is close to exceptional outdoor recreation areas: the Ozark and the Ouachita Mountains of southern Arkansas, the forest and bayous of northern Louisiana and numerous lakes in Texas and Louisiana. Shreveport is the site of several annual sports and arts events. Spectacular New Orleans-style parades and parties are the backdrop for Mardi Gras in the Ark-La-Tex. The Red River Revel, celebrated in October, is an eight-day festival of food, arts and music, featuring nationally-known musicians; Mudbug Madness in June salutes the crawfish, Louisiana’s most notable crustacean; the Independence Bowl, played in December, is one of the major NCAA football bowl games. For recreation in the city, Cross Lake offers excellent facilities for water sports, and good fishing is to be found in the area’s many lakes. Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce |
