Neurodegenerative diseases are particularly pernicious in that they slowly rob the affected person of their humanity. Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) consists of a dichotomy of proteinopathies. On one hand there is FTLD-τ which is characterized by deposits of microtubule associated protein tau in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. On the other hand there is FTLD-U which is classified by tau-negative, ubiquitin positive inclusions which usually have a culprit protein of TAR DNA binding protein 43 kDa (TDP-43). I have been involved in developing models of both sides of FTLD in my first few years here at LSUHSC-S and now my research is turning more towards characterizing the disease process and testing novel gene products on these models of FTLD.
